November 2018 Question of the Month
When the Growing Edge Question of the Month for November is posted, the midterm elections will be just a few days away. No matter what the outcome, the political struggle in the U.S. will go on for a long time to come. So this month—with the help of writer Terry Tempest Williams—we pose a question that invites us to explore the growing edge where the personal and the political meet.Williams writes, "The human heart is the first home of democracy. It is where we embrace our questions. Can we be equitable? Can we be generous? Can we listen with our whole beings, not just our minds, and offer our attention rather than our opinions? And do we have enough resolve in our hearts to act courageously, relentlessly, without giving up—ever—trusting our fellow citizens to join with us in our determined pursuit of a living democracy?” Our question is this: What can we do, inwardly and outwardly, to help make our hearts large enough to hold both the demands and the promise of a government “of the people, by the people, and for the people”?
